Game drives.

Guided game drives in Uganda are safaris best done on 4X4 safari vehicles with pop-up roofs. You will be driven along tracks to strategic spots to see different wild animal and bird species. Game drives are done within numerous savannah destinations. These include Queen Elizabeth National Park, Lake Mburo National Park and Semliki National Park in the western region. Chimpanzee treks.

Another unmissable activity on Uganda safaris is the precious time you will spend on chimpanzee treks. These occur in very many destinations e.g. Kibale National Park, Bugoma Forest, Budongo Forest, Kyambura Gorge and Kalinzu Forest etc. Uganda has one of the highest populations of eastern chimpanzees (around 5,000) in Africa. The minimum age for tracking these great apes is 12 years. You will need a chimpanzee permit to consider doing this unique activity. The best time to do safaris in Uganda is in the dry months of the year. This is the dry season which normally occurs twice yearly. The long dry season runs from June to early September, with June and July being the driest months. The short dry season runs from December to February. Dry seasons are characterized by reduced precipitation and warm dry atmospheres. However, expect some light rains even in the dry season.

Nevertheless, during the dry season, the protected areas are less muddy, less slippery and contain less dense vegetation cover. The advantage of this is you will traverse the game tracks and forest/nature trails much easier. You will also get clearer views of the wildlife. Since there is scarcity of water in the game viewing protected areas, you will see numerous species of wild animals congregated in a few particular spots with reliable water sources.

The reduced rains of the dry season make your tour uninterruptible. You will not stop to wait for the rains to stop, or much worse for the tour to be postponed. This might however happen in the rainy season. There is a long rainy season that occurs from March to May and a short rainy season from October to November. These rains create numerous water sources in the protected areas. The rains also facilitate growth of dense vegetation the cover in protected areas.

The rainy season is therefore suited for birdwatching tours. The abundant water and dense vegetation attract birds for breeding. From November to April, more migratory birds are attracted to Uganda’s protected areas. Then, you should be aware that the rainy season is also a low season. The low numbers of tourists in the protected areas offer more tranquil tour experiences if you like quieter and less crowded tour destinations.
