Uganda Safaris
Uganda is not only a famous safari destination but also the Pearl of Africa. Uganda covers 241,599km2 of land in East Africa. Millions of visitors on Uganda safaris come with high expectations to enjoy numerous activities . Gorilla trekking is a key activities visitors come for during their Uganda safaris.
Uganda Safaris
Out of the 1,063 extant mountain gorillas globally, Uganda has over half of them. Plus, there are 25 habituated gorilla families that can be tracked daily.
These endangered apes reside only in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (321km2) and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (33.7km2). These forested protected areas are nestled in the Albertine Rift region in southwestern Uganda. Bwindi currently has over 459 gorillas and at least 23 habituated gorilla families. Mgahinga on the other hand is part of the greater Virunga and has only 1 habituated gorilla group.
A gorilla trek in either Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is done only after you present a gorilla trekking permit in the park. This is only issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. We at Kinyeti can purchase the permit on for you. The advantage of purchasing through us is that we are a licenced tour operator. You also get tailormade tour packages comprising more activities, transportation, accommodation and meals etc.
Acquire your gorilla permit in advance, at least 3 months before your trekking date. This is because gorilla permits offered for purchase are limited for each day and buying one is highly competitive. You need to be at the park at around 7:00AM with your permit. You will first be briefed on gorilla trekking. Then you will be accompanied by a ranger guide and armed guide to locate a habituated gorilla group in the forest.
You will encounter the gorilla family, spend an hour and at least 7 meters away from them. You will see these primates in their habitat and take photos. Afterwards, you will return to where you started to complete your gorilla trekking tour. The entirety of the gorilla trek may last 4-6 hours, depending on your physical fitness to walk on rugged terrain and location of the gorilla group. You must be at least 15 years old to trek mountain gorillas in Uganda.

Other activities to do in Uganda apart from gorilla trekking?
There are still plenty of activities provided for you to choose on Uganda safaris. Some of the best ones include;-
Game drives.
Guided game drives in Uganda are safaris best done on 4X4 safari vehicles with pop-up roofs. You will be driven along tracks to strategic spots to see different wild animal and bird species. Game drives are done within numerous savannah destinations. These include Queen Elizabeth National Park, Lake Mburo National Park and Semliki National Park in the western region. Also, Murchison Falls NP in the northwest, and Kidepo National Park in the northeast.
Game drives take 2-4 hours and are normally done either in the morning or afternoon. You may also go for a night game drive, especially in Lake Mburo National Park. Animals to see on your game drives during Uganda safaris include lions, leopards, African elephants, Rothchild’s giraffes, Jackson’s hartebeests, cape buffaloes, Uganda kobs, oribis, warthogs, common elands, Burchell’s zebras, cheetahs, African wild dogs etc.
Golden monkey treks.
Golden monkey treks are unmissable tours in Uganda done by visitors at least 12 years of age. You can do a golden monkey trek only in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Tracking these old-world monkeys in the bamboo habitat requires you to first purchase a permit. Kinyeti can do this efficiently on your behalf. You will track a habituated troop of golden monkeys and allowed an hour in their presence. You will witness their unique behaviors while photographing them.
Nature walks.
Uganda safaris are made even more enjoyable if you also opt for a nature walk. This is an opportunity to get up-close with Uganda’s natural wonders on foot. Guided nature walks are not only for viewing wildlife but also a way to keep fit. Key destinations to go for a nature walk include Mabira Forest, Sipi Falls, Mount Elgon, Murchison Falls National Park, Lake Mburo National Park, Semliki National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park etc.
Nature walks during Uganda safaris offer opportunities to see wildlife such as mammals, primates, birds, insects, amphibians, reptiles and plants etc. Primates to see include vervet monkeys, olive baboons, chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys and Angola colobus monkeys etc. Key wild animals to encounter during your nature walk include Burchell’s zebras, Uganda kobs, hippos, cape buffaloes and elands among others.
Mountain hikes.
Hiking tours on Uganda’s mountains are breathtaking adventures. Mountains to hike in Uganda include Rwenzori (5,019m), Mount Elgon (4,321m), Sabinyo (3,669m), Moroto (3,083m) and Muhabura (4,127m) etc. Guided hikes on Rwenzori or Elgon offer enjoyable views of different waterfalls, bird species, primates and animals like forest elephants, giant forest hog and forest buffaloes. On Mount Elgon, you will see one of the largest calderas in Africa.
Chimpanzee treks.
Another unmissable activity on Uganda safaris is the precious time you will spend on chimpanzee treks. These occur in very many destinations e.g. Kibale National Park, Bugoma Forest, Budongo Forest, Kyambura Gorge and Kalinzu Forest etc. Uganda has one of the highest populations of eastern chimpanzees (around 5,000) in Africa. You will have a guided trek in the forest to search for a habituated group of our closest relatives.
One hour is allowed for a visitor to spend near the chimpanzee group in their natural habitat. You will find this duration sufficient to watch these lively apes as you take photos. The minimum age for tracking these great apes is 12 years. You will need a chimpanzee permit to consider doing this unique activity. Again, we are your trusted tour operator to purchase the permit on your behalf. You might as well do this in advance to avoid inconveniences.
The best time to do safari in Uganda?
The best time to do safaris in Uganda is in the dry months of the year. This is the dry season which normally occurs twice yearly. The long dry season runs from June to early September, with June and July being the driest months. The short dry season runs from December to February. Dry seasons are characterized by reduced precipitation and warm dry atmospheres. However, expect some light rains even in the dry season.
Nevertheless, during the dry season, the protected areas are less muddy, less slippery and contain less dense vegetation cover. The advantage of this is you will traverse the game tracks and forest/nature trails much easier. You will also get clearer views of the wildlife. Since there is scarcity of water in the game viewing protected areas, you will see numerous species of wild animals congregated in a few particular spots with reliable water sources.
The reduced rains of the dry season make your tour uninterruptible. You will not stop to wait for the rains to stop, or much worse for the tour to be postponed. This might however happen in the rainy season. There is a long rainy season that occurs from March to May and a short rainy season from October to November. These rains create numerous water sources in the protected areas. The rains also facilitate growth of dense vegetation the cover in protected areas.
The rainy season is therefore suited for birdwatching tours. The abundant water and dense vegetation attract birds for breeding. From November to April, more migratory birds are attracted to Uganda’s protected areas. Then, you should be aware that the rainy season is also a low season. The low numbers of tourists in the protected areas offer more tranquil tour experiences if you like quieter and less crowded tour destinations.
